Western Isles can reap renewables benefits says Scottish Government        16/4/09

Energy Minister Jim Mather visited Stornoway today to discuss how the Western Isles can benefit from the development of renewables.

Following discussions with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and other local partners Jim Mather said:  "We want all areas of Scotland to be able to fully harness our vast potential for cheap, clean and green energy.

“Maximising that potential brings economic and community benefits and the people of the Western Isles are no different in wanting to use their natural resources to build a sustainable economy.

He added: "Recent positive announcements demonstrate the opportunities there are for renewables on the Islands.”

He pointed out: “Siadar is one the largest consented commercial wave projects in the world and BiFab will move into facilities at Arnish, creating 60 jobs.”

Mr Mather stressed: "The study we published in January showed that there could be an increase in renewable energy development, in harmony with nature, that could create jobs and sustainable opportunities for the Western Isles.

"The steering group has been working constructively over recent months and will soon be publishing an action plan to ensure that the positive recommendations in the report are delivered.
