Weaving course will pass on local skills                5/2/10

New weavers are being sought to fulfil an expected demand for Harris Tweed.

Training places for about 12 people are available on a three month course which will start in March. The deadline for applying for courses is today.

Experienced weavers who have formal textile qualifications will pass on their knowledge to new applicants.

At the end successful trainees will gain a SVQ certificate in manufacturing textiles under the New Start Harris Tweed Weaving scheme.

Courses are being delivered on Lewis under the auspices of Cardonald College which has developed a training and accreditation scheme for Harris Tweed weavers.

The course is part of a £50,000 investment into an initiative aimed at retaining and pass on skills across the Hebridean workforce.

It is backed by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the European Social Fund.
