Sirs,                                                                                                   23/3/09

The following is a quotation from a statement by Calum Maclean, a candidate in the Stornoway Trust Election.

The statement has been made by Mr Maclean in response to a question posed to him about his views on the prospect of Stornoway Golf Club using the course on Sundays.

"It would mean that other people would have to work on a Sunday. Those who want such facilities to open display a somewhat selfish attitude when they are determined that such facilities should open on this day. They are attempting to deny others what they enjoy themselves."

On behalf of the Committe and members of Stornoway Golf Club, I wish to draw Mr Maclean's attention to a meeting, at which he was present, held at Leverhulme House, Stornoway, in February 2008, between the Stornoway Trust and the office-bearers of Stornoway Golf Club.

At this meeting, in response to a question by the Stornoway Trust Chairman, the Golf Club Captain stated that Sunday opening of the course would NOT result in persons being employed on that day in order that members and others be given the opportunity to enjoy their Sunday in a way that they see fit.

The Committee of Stornoway Golf Club wishes to re-affirm that statement, and to utterly refute the erroneous candidate statement by Mr Maclean.

If, and when, the Stornoway Golf Club premises (separate from the Course, not part of the lease) are open on Sundays and staff are employed to provide services on these premises, this will be done in accordance with the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005, to be implemented in Scotland from September 2009.

On a separate but related topic, the Committee of Stornoway Golf Club gives its full support to Councillor Angus Campbell and members of Lews Castle Trust (of which the Stornoway Trust is a partner) for their efforts to protect our history and heritage through the planned cultural and commercial development of Lews Castle, the most iconic building on the Stornoway landscape.

We believe there is a certain degree of inevitability about the "hotel" section of the refurbished Lews Castle being open for 7 day business in any week.

What's sauce for the goose....!
