Internet petition against Broad Bay salmon farm 9/2/10
An internet petition has been launched against the proposed fish farm in Broad Bay on Lewis. Lighthouse Caledonia is applying for planning permission to install salmon cages in the sea off Gress.
The No Fish Farms in Broad Bay campaign, in its early stages, has been launched in response to growing local concern about the development.
An online website is also running in association with the campaign at www.nofishfarmsinbroadbay.wordpress.com.
Protesters say the development risks the marine, coastal and estuary environments of the Broad Bay area and the local economy.

The campaign aims to pull together those in the communities and organisations of Broad Bay and beyond who are opposed to the development .
One commenter on the petition said: “The area concerned was a fish nursery ground. It is now open again, but local fisherman avoid the area, as it is thought the place requires more recovery.
“Putting this fish farm here will not help that, nor the stocks of salmon and seatrout which run the Gress and Coll rivers. Here we see greed coming to annihilate a place of special interest and natural beauty once again.”
A local woman said: “I believe this would massive environmental impact on the area. There are several salmon/trout rivers emptying into Broad Bay and this would impact on the health of those rivers.”
