Allan comments on isles’ renewable energy  report                    30/1/09

Government unveils renewable energy report for Western Isles

Council wants positive action to build giant windfarm

Western Isles SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has commented after the Western Isles Economic and Community Benefit Study, undertaken by Halcrow Consultants, was released today.
Dr Allan commented: “This is a study into what is viable as regards renewable energy in the Western Isles, and was undertaken after the Scottish Government refused consent to the North Lewis wind farm on the grounds of incompatibility with European Law.
“I welcome the recognition by the Scottish Government that the Western Isles have the potential for renewable energy developments, but that this has to respect environmental designations and the will of local communities.
“This report is also, and rightly, very supportive of community based projects, such as the one we have only recently seen approved at Siadar, which have the potential to help rejuvenate many island communities.
“It must be stressed that this is not planning permission or a proposal from a developer, but a study into ways in which the regeneration of the Western Isles could be assisted by exploiting the massive potential for all forms of renewable energy, particularly marine and community renewables, which exists in the islands.
“At last we have a balanced and reasonable study that sets out the options for much needed economic development in the Western Isles but shows respect for peoples views and for the local population.”
