New central belt air service mooted for Western Isles         30/6/09

Obanair Ltd has announced a route feasibility study into connecting Prestwick and Edinburgh with the Outer Hebrides.

The new airline is considering links to Lewis and Benbecula - both going through Connel airport near Oban.

It will study a service between Prestwick - Oban - Stornoway as well as Edinburgh - Oban - Balivanich.

Spencer Pryor CEO of Obanair commented: "It might seem a strange time to be mooting new air routes in the depths of a recession, but we feel we need to start planning now for when the economy improves.

"We are hoping that our market research will show that there is a demand for a daily service on these routes using a small commuter aircraft such as a Jetstream 31 or Twin Otter.

"Dependent on the outcome of the research the company intends to apply for a Category B airline operators licence and undergo a second round of financing with the intention of starting operations in the Spring of 2010."
