Mini tornado hits Stornoway damaging cars and property             29/7/09

A mini tornado hit Stornoway last night (Tues) leaving a trial of damage in its wake. The twister damaged cars and property as it whipped its way up from south to north across the town.

A vehicle was upturned outside the Sea Angling Club at Newton by the funnel of wind. Another car in Garden Road also suffered damage as did sheds and outhouses in nearby streets. Slates were ripped off roofs and branches torn off trees.

The mini twister swept  from the Newton area, up Matheson Road and north over the town.

It appears to have followed a track leading from the south-west towards the north-east of the town. It was last reported disappearing beyond the Sand Street area into the dark around 10.30pm.

There was thunder and lightning and a burst of heavy torrential rain in the area prior to the incident.

Stornoway coastguards say that they observed the wind picking up rapidly around the time of the reports and then dropping just as fast.

“The wind sounded different than normal” said a spokesperson.
