“Labour and council’s honesty crisis”           9/2/10

Sirs,

As the evidence emerges, the truth about Labour's shameful smear campaign is laid bare.

Cllr MacSween knew nothing, he insists.

How believable or credible is that? The evidence reveals, that in addition to MP and MSP being informed of the savage 2007 review, the council and the workforce were told at the same time.

It was discussed on Radio nan Gaidheal, there were informative articles in local and regional newspapers which, I would imagine, Councillor MacSween would have had access to, all warning of the dangers to the Uist Range.

It beggars belief that he could possibly have been blind and deaf to what was being forewarned.

He claims the first he knew was two years later, when Malcolm Burr pleaded with him to use his contacts to save Uist. Isn't it dreadful his own Labour councillors didn't speak to him over these two years?

The Chairman of the council committee responsible for economic development (and the range) is none other than Cllr Archie Campbell. Did the Labour and North Uist councillor, negligently fail to inform his fellow councillors or, the "contacts" (presumably Labour), in Westminster? Or has Cllr MacSween "dropped-him-in-it" to cover his own untruths?

Were the Western Isles Constituency Labour Party active during the two years, were meetings held to formulate a plan of action and if so, did they exclude Councillor MacSween?

Councillors’ Code of Conduct has seven key principals, two of which are, Integrity and Honesty. Council Leader and Chief Executive must tell us what they do to ensure these principles are upheld.
