Comhairle welcomes Beauly - Denny decision      6/1/10

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is urging the Scottish Government to approve planning applications for giant wind farms on Lewis.

The huge schemes would export electricity via the new Beauly to Denny power line to customers in the south.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar leader Angus Campbell said the upgrade of the mainland network was needed to release the unrivalled renewables potential in the Islands and the north of Scotland.

He said: “It is essential, however, that other infrastructure upgrades, such as the inter-connector to the Outer Hebrides, are brought to fruition at

the earliest opportunity.

“The Outer Hebrides inter-connector offers the best opportunity for

Scotland and the UK to make strategic progress on realising the on-shore wind and the marine energy potential west of the Hebrides.

“To ensure the maximisation of Beauly-Denny and to ensure progress on the Outer Hebrides inter-connector we would urge the Minister to now take decisions in regard to outstanding wind-farm applications in the Outer Hebrides."
