Pensioner brandished axe                     3/2/10

A 75-year-old pensioner who brandished an axe at his family had his sentence deferred for six months for good behaviour.

Kenneth Maclennan of 1A Garynahine, Lewis, appeared from custody at Stornoway Sherrif Court yesterday (wed).

He admitted placing family members in a state of fear and alarm by wielding an axe inside his home on Tuesday night.

Fiscal David Teale said he fetched an axe and brandished it when the family started arguing over excessively loud music.

His lawyer said he was deaf and had turned up the volume on the radio. He was simply holding the axe in his hand as it kept by the hearth to chop wood for the open fire.
